I'd suggest using the "name" key for the normal name for thing, and then 
there's things like "loc_name" for local names for things, "nat_name" 
for a national name - which I use for Welsh place names in predominantly 
English speaking areas of Wales.

Then of course, there's "ref" for things like official route designators 
- like "I90", "M4", that sort of thing.
