Hi Nic,
It looks pretty good - did you do that all yourself? Thats a whole
load of cycling/driving. I think it'll look really nice when its
rendered:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/index.html?lat=-25.779306583591687&lon=28.247936449414347&zoom=12
You can really enhance the rendering by adding areas, particularly
things like parks and open spaces, then you have nice green areas that
add some colour to the map. One thing to note though, when i tried to
download the GPS traces for the area, not all of the roads you have
drawn have GPS traces associated - if you derived the vectors from GPS
traces, its best to upload them to OSM - so that we have "proof" that
you actually went out and did the leg work (all becuase of copyright
issues). If you derived them from an old map or something, or if SA
doesnt have the same copyright laws as the UK and most countries in
Europe, than thats cool.
The roads look good though - but you've got a lot of work ahead ;-) -
as I remember it the entire N1 coridor from J'berg to Pretoria is
surrounded by housing estates. SA is a good example of how OSM can
really kick ass in getting the most up-to-date geo-data around - as
there are so many new developments.
Also, OSM's flexible ontology and history features fit well for a
country like SA, where you have in some cases different names for the
same places in different languages.
So, good mapping - its always cool to see OSM coverage expanding into
new areas. Hey, if you have any contacts in Durban or Cape Town, I'd
fancy a mapping weekend there. Jan 2008 maybe!
