Please remember that openstreetmaps is in a serious growth phase.
Areas like waterways have not been worked out completely mostly
because 99% of users have zero experience in that area. Most of the
existing tags are from the point of view of people who don't use
boats.
So, if you have a model of how you think the data should be collected
and the kind of useful information, please write out a proposal.
Information about canals has been discussed before, but most of the
people involved had no idea what kind of information was relevent. Are
there standards w.r.t sizes of canals, what kinds of boats are
permitted where, that kind of thing?
So, if you could contribute your expertise, you can shape the future
of the project to suit your needs. Now is the time to get involved :)
Only one thing about what you suggest. Currently OSM use
nodes/segments/ways but there's no kind of bitmap area "object"
(mainly because it hasn't been needed yet) though I expect it will
come in the future. Any suggestions you have about what you need from
such a feature would also be welcome.
