Sounds like he is, basically, unhappy with people losing interest in 
(printed) maps. Maybe someone laid off by Bartholomew or so. He believes 
  we are about (printed) maps, rather than about (the abstract idea of 
a) world map. Viewed in this light, his comments almost make sense.
