I have committed the patch, and it should be in tonight's auto-build (in 
josm-latest.jar from tomorrow). Please give feedback on this list 
whether this solves all issues - or should we introduce a config option

I must admit that personally, I liked the plain old no-dropdown 
no-autocomplete no-nothing interface better - I always know what I want 
to write and I am faster in hitting alt-a "highway" tab "residential" 
enter than selecting anything from a dropdown because that is not as 
much routine.

It seems to me that pressing "enter" after entering the value does not 
close the dialog every time, only sometimes. Anyone else noticed that?
