More likely that a street number is related to something adjacent to a way, 
either to the left or right, typically a building, a certain distance along it 
from the start of the way.

I'd like to see a postman try to deliver letters to the middle of the road.

In postal terms, a delivery point is where the postman delivers letters to, 
which is typically the letter box on the door of the property, or a mailbox at 
the property boundary (as is typical in the USA).
