I have no unicode experience, but I'll try to fix it using
PangoLayout. PangoLayout also allows rotated text (ETA 2 weeks).

The goal is to use a precalculated PNG for lowzoom and make the
default a world view. (Far down the TODO list)

I know that it's difficult to search for "George Street" in a specific
city because there are so many of them in the database already. Is
that what you are referring to ?
