I agree. Especially objectionable is the randomly placed "Advertise 
here" feature. I do not think the map surface itself should have 
advertising at any level of zoom. It may be appropriate on other sites 
which use OpenStreetMap's software, but not on the project's main 
showplace. They being "much smaller than gads" is just spin. Size 
doesn't matter, it's what you do with them that's important.

I think there is definitely a conflict of interest here. Steve has done 
the work, the principle is demonstrated, the software works (after a 
fashion) and maybe Mappam has some feedback on the acceptability of this 
kind of advertising. Now take they ads off!
