good point. Users without the possibility to type umlauts may tend to 
replace, e.g., an 'ü' by an 'ue' instead of simply 'u' (and the forth).

But there are not only german umlauts. what's with other locations like 
Århus in Denmark? Maybe the single character replacement is the most 
'general' idea.
