Of cause what messes this up completely is that the language list fails to
recognise 'British' English, uses uk for Ukrainian, and I think messes up
other country codes.

http://www.i18nguy.com/unicode/language-identifiers.html provides a much more
comprehensive reference, with all the common language variants covered. That
includes variants of French and other langauages as well as English.
( Did you know that they have a variant of Welsh in Argentina? )

Of cause full Unicode support is essential to cover all variations, but
basically we end up with name:en-GB
