One difference being that OSM is more than just maps, it's also a project with 
a community, a set of tools etc.

A compromise might be to make the sidebar more informative. For example, it's 
not clear that 'Help & wiki' take you to the central place to get the tools, 
find out how to map, get in touch with the community, etc.
