[OSM-talk] Alternative placenames?

Sorry, that was me being overly enthusiastic and straying too far south!
The variant I removed is extremely uncommon, (verging on spelling
mistake?)
My standard test for typos is the Google score :
Porthmadog (official Welsh spelling) gets 481,000 hits
Portmadoc (official English spelling)gets 27,800 hits
Porthmadoc gets 660 hits - down in the random noise sector of the
internet...

As to the larger case, I'm not sure it's a good idea to put "SpellingA
or SpellingB" as a value - the renderers won't pick that up so you'll
get ugly maps...

Phillip

For name=Porthmadog in Wales, I put "name:en=Portmadoc or Porthmadoc"
(the
name finder would then find either.)

However I notice someone has removed the second one so it now just reads
name:en=Portmadoc. I have heard it called both.
