After last week there has been some more work in importing coastlines
from the DB into mapnik. I only concentrated on europe but this
applies to the whole world.

I've made a slippymap that give an idea of what's still to do:
http://tile.openstreetmap.nl/coastlines.html

The white areas have been succesfully filled in, the red dots indicate
discontinuities in the coastline. As you can see there is much left to
do.

The big dots are big discontinuities, they are usually where someone
stopped uploading and it hasn't been joined up. The smaller ones are
ones that need to be fixed for osmarender, but the mapnik scripts can
live with them.

There's may be bugs in the calculations for the small dots.

Have a nice day,
