Tried it briefly but was unable to log in (yellow dialog would stay
put even after entering login details, no editing possible).

I think having a pure JavaScript/OpenLayers based editor is very cool
because it will enable people who set up their own sites (maybe with
OSM link-up, maybe for mapping ancient Rome) to easily build
customized editing into their pages. It seems to me that neither
Potlatch nor JOSM serve that target group very well.
