I think the idea is that OSM should not bother putting in old data.
But yes OSM has a history of nodes/ways and you can compare with old
versions of planet.osm, so in some time it will be interesting to look at
applications showing the changes over time (there is something online that
already does this, though I couldn't get it to work). Come back in 800 years
and look at how the world has changed by looking at OSM versions.
