There are certain requests taht can only be sent to the main server -
firs tand foremost any kind of write request, but also some of the
more esoteric kinds of requests like the "changes" request.
Additionally, if you intend to modify an object, you want to base your
modification on the current version and to make sure you really have
that, you will ususally send any read request that is used to prepare
an edit session to the main server as well.
Anything else can, and should if at all feasible, be run off planet
files, planet diffs, or Osmxapi-like mirror servers. It is easy to
create 5 additional Osmxapi servers if the one that's there becomes
slow; but we will have to stick with one central server for the
forseeable future.
