I mostly agree with your other points, but as for this one, I would rather 
have the opposite: The delete button deletes the currently selected 
objects, but stays in "select mode" so that subsequent clicks will select 
and not immediately delete what is clicked on. Deleting the current 
selection is very useful (e.g., combined with searching) and should not be 
removed.
