I think you should be able to select the segment and press delete. If it
was at the end of a way, the way is shortened. If if was in the middle,
the way is split into 2.

I strongly disagree with this, and join the list of people who believe
that deleting should be an action, and not a mode. I.e. to delete
something, you select it, then press delete, but you remain in selecting
(or moving) mode.
