You don't need ODBC or mkfontdir if you just install the core java
packages. I have installed:
$ grep java-1.6 /var/log/rpmpkgs
java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.2-1jpp.x86_64.rpm
java-1.6.0-sun-devel-1.6.0.2-1jpp.x86_64.rpm
java-1.6.0-sun-src-1.6.0.2-1jpp.x86_64.rpm
