Next Potlatch will require you to select one or the other (Edit/Play),  
rather than defaulting to editing.

I can guarantee that if it defaulted to Play, there'd be 8bn  
complaints on the mailing list about "I spent five hours drawing my  
local roads and they haven't appeared on the map, and now I can't find  
them again. Why not??!!!?!111".
