FYI: To my experience, tooltips works much, much better than any statusbar information - users simply tend to ignore them especially for such usage hints.

As a rule of thumb: Put any "static information" (e.g. help, hotkeys, examples, ...) into the tooltip and any "dynamic information" (e.g. file size, currently selected item, ...) into the statusbar - that's how users typically expect the information - at least if they know/recognize the statusbar at all ;-)
