[OSM-talk] Erratic place names on mapnik slippy map

Hello,

I'm a bit mystified, the place name rendering on the mapnik layer of the
slippy map is erratic and so very confusing!

Start here, looking at south London:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.46612699096678&lon=-0.029025904642302213&zoom=11&layers=B0F

Zoom into Brixton and that name remains, but Camberwell, Clapham, Battersea
and other "towns" mysteriously disappear whilst new names show up including
towns (e.g. Peckham, Putney) and villages (e.g. Dulwich, East Dulwich).
Zoom in again and Brixton goes too, along with Dulwich, East Dulwich,
Putney and others.

I can see that in some cases the text will be knocked off because of road
refs, names, etc. Peckham is also a special case at the moment because I
recently downgraded it to a village. But it would be nice if place names
rendered a bit more consistently, and especially if all town, village and
hamlet showed up at appropriate zoom levels. Otherwise it can be a bit hard
to navigate the maps.

Kind regards,
Tom
