No technical reasons. Having a "role" at all was already something which 
  took some time to explain to many people so I didn't even think about 
the more general (and complex) schema that you suggest, although I do 
readily admit that there is a certain beauty to it. (Heck, many weren't 
even convinced we needed relations at all - explain to them that you 
don't only want relations, but you want to be able to have a full tag 
set for each individual membership...)
