He said so that others can see how he has done it.  I think he is 
actually rather protective of his program.  I can understand 
that.  It is not an open source project and he is only sharing any of 
it as a gift, so I can't look it in the mouth (as in gift horses).

It is a pretty nice program to use on the PC.  You can download USGS 
tiles and keep them on your PC.  I currently am using about 2 GB 
trying to cover Maryland and Virginia with two resolutions of topo 
and photo images.  I think I am about half done.  That is a large 
area and would fit nicely on an 8 GB flash card with room to 
spare.  It would help a lot with my geocaching.  There is info in 
these images that will never be in OSM.  It would be fantastic to 
combine them both!
