Agreed.  I've wondered whether this tag or some variant might be better if attached to individual nodes in way.  Then an icon could be rendered at the node.  it would give a high degree of control over how complicated route maps are rendered and allow multiple routes per way.  But then on the other hand perhaps that is mixing substance with form and it might be difficult for a  renderer to decide what icon/labelling to put. Just wondering aloud.
