If the two ways cross, just clicking on the junction will insert a 
common node in the two ways (or shift-click if another node is already 
selected so it doesn't extend).

If you just want to join ends of two ways, select one end and in Draw 
Nodes mode click the other end.

If you want to extend a way to join part way along another way, simply 
click on the existing way, with the end of the way to be extended selected.

There is a palette that shows this: the third from the bottom of the 
menu of buttons that control the palettes. Also ALT+O (letter not zero)
