Thanks to Frederik for having an interest in the forum even though you
prefer other means of communication. I will not go further into the
discussion of forum v.s. ML v.s. IRC etc., I think we're past that. Fact is
there is a 'market' for an OSM forum and even though it is hard to find it
shows it's use already.
In my opinion it would be simplest to just forward forum.openstreetmap.org
to the current host. Working together with my ISP I have prepared my account
for this so the transition should be fairly simple.
If there are reasons to not do this then I have no problem handing over the
forum to OSM (or whatever) as said in earlier mails. I volunteer to do
admin/moderator duties whatever the outcome.
On the subject of login accounts: I would love to implement the
authentication method used by the (test?) forum on the dev server into 'my'
forum, but I admit immediately this is not very high on my todo list. OSM
already uses different accounts for different services, one more won't be a
showstopper. There are also some other dev things I would like to on the
forum. All in due time and I will happy to cooperate if someone else steps
up to the plate.
Maybe the forum could also be used as drop-in replacement for the 'discuss
pages' of the wiki as most discussions follow a threaded approach already
and the wiki isn't really up to that. This is just a thought and something
for the long run if we wish to implement this, but I couldn't resist
mentioning it (if it hasn't already somewhere else) and should be discussed
in another environment probably.
But first we need to sort out what we want to do with
forum.openstreetmap.org.

There is a web viewer already for this list (at gmane.org). I am
strongly opposed to any attempts of automatically "gating" stuff
between a mailing list and a forum.
You are right, there are many things discussed in many places (Wiki,
IRC, lists, forum, even trac) - but that's just the way life is, and I
think this is good rather than bad. The lists are already croweded as
they are; if we attempted to channel every single OSM related
discussion that people have elsewhere, say on IRC or in the Forum,
onto the lists as well then they would become utterly unreadable.
I think it works good as it is. Those who prefer chats can join IRC,
those who like mailing lists are here, and others propose and discuss
ideas on the Wiki. Until now, there have always been enough people
"wandering between worlds" to make sure that people are pointed to
discussions elsewhere when it made sense.
This natural segmentation is good for us all. Any attempt to force
everybody onto the same medium in the (vain!) hope that from then on
everything need only be said once will have a detrimental impact on
the community.
Bye
Frederik
