Has anyone tried to use data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission
to add detail to osm maps? It could be used to add approximate altitude
data to nodes, or for giving a shaded background to maps showing
mountainous regions.

A lot of nasa material has a very relaxed licence or is public domain.
I'm not sure if it's covered by nasa copyright guidelines
(http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/policies.html#Guidelines), and I don't think
they're compatible with CC-By-SA. Still it could be used to make shaded
backgrounds for open street map that are simply licensed differently?
