I am rather ambigious whether I like it a lot. But lots of your reasoning builds on the fact that it comes across as copyright information right now. Which is a bad thing, I agree. However if you take the information to be something like CVS/SVN blame, ie. who modified that road last and was active in that area, I hav to say that I find that information quite interesting.

Even if your work is in the PD, people might like that their name is displayed publically. And if I want to complete a part of a city, I find it interesting to see who else was/is active there.

In that sense, I find the information interesting. It boils down, I think to whether the osmarender map should be a nice looking end-user map, or whether it should be the quick-turnaround map which is used by OSM mappers for confirming and debugging their mapping.


Would you still like that information if it's not related to licensing and copyright, but just to give an indication of who is active in that area?
