Agreed. Ultimately I plan to redo the entire tags panel so that you  
don't have to refer to Map Features except in rare cases. Will  
require a bit of work though!

Just do them as two different ways; might be easiest to draw the road  
as one, tag it up, then split and tag each individual part.

It doesn't, I'm afraid. Shift-click to merge ways only works from the  
start or end (A or D).

The A-B C-D thing comes from the fact that segments can appear in any  
combination within a way. When segments are dropped with OSM 0.5, it  
will cease to be a problem; A-B and C-D will be separate ways which  
you can rejoin as normal.
