[OSM-talk] How do I create/get planet.osm file?

Hi all,

Assuming I can get osm2shp to build with some help, or I can try using 
osm2pgsql, it looks like these programs us planet.osm as the input.
How do I create planet.osm or where do I get it from?

I read through the faq and various pages in the wiki, but it was not 
obvious to me how to get extract or otherwise get the road network.

Some help or pointers to doc I should be readu=ing for this would be 
appreciated.
