IMHO, we should support both:

building:height=10m
 and
building:height=50ft

*But*, measuring meters (or feet, or yards, or lightnanoseconds[1])can be
pretty challenging. OTOH I think that everyone is capable of counting how
many stories (or floors) a building has.

I know, I know. In fact, they can vary a lot in the same city.

For example, Madrid has some buildings built in neoclassical/neo-baroque
style[2][3][4] (up to 3 meters per floor), and beehive-like condos[5] (can be
as low as 2 meters per floor)

In other words, I don't give a damn about the exact height of a building.

You may think "but we can estimate 2.2 meters per floor, and enter data into
the building:height tag that way". However, you'll be entering (mostly)
inaccurate data, when you could be entering accurate data about the number of
stories/floors.

By the way: I really want to point out that the spanish cadastre stores and
publishes information (as a WFS service[6]) about the number of floors that
every part of a building has, with no attention to the height (meters or
otherwise).

[7] For those who've seen [6] and are wondering where the number of floors
are, please note that they're on roman numerals. e.g. "-I+IX" means "one
basement, nine floors"; "VI+TZA" means "six floors, plus a terrace on top".

I think I'll be proposing "building:stories=number" soon.

Cheers,
