And generally to be encouraged, I'd think. The OSM db structure should  
be designed for completeness (i.e. can we record what we want to?) and  
efficiency of editing (i.e. can we add to it in an easy, fast  
manner?), not for any of a zillion specific uses. After all, we even  
preprocess the ways to get our own Mapnik rendering.
