Yep, you're right, Mercator is no help.
  BTW, I rendered tiles (for marble) in Lat/Lon aka Geographic, Plate  
Carre, equirectangular,cylindrical equidistant, unprojected etc.
Still, there are too many re-sampling artifacts. I'll try smaller  
tile sizes ..
