A year or two ago (before I joined the OSM community) I started work on
such an application. I even implemented some basic 3d rendering and
relief generating from SRTM data (later I used that code for Srtm2Osm
project). And then I concentrated on importing GPS tracks and showing
elevation profiles (see
http://igorbrejc.net/gps/gpstrekker-my-almost-forgotten-project). But I
never took the time to make something decent out of it.
As I state in my blog post, I will try to add the features you mention
to Kosmos... In a few months or so :). So we can exchange ideas and
experiences if you really decide to do your summer project. Or maybe
work together? :)
