Oh Potlatch will display them if it is reading the raw track, but they
aren't inserted into the database so downloading GPS data for an area
will not get them.

All your trick does is to stop the track being discarded by the import
daemon (because it now has importable data in it) which means it is
available for direct use in Potlatch as a raw track.
