[OSM-talk] JOSM and data set size

I am currently editing a section of the world where little other editing has
been done before -- as the area is quite extensive, some 10 * 10 degrees, I
cannot use the ordinary API to download the data, so I have been using the
informationfreeway API to get the dataset that OSM has for my area.

I know this not the live DB, but as I am the only one editing roads there, I
think it is ok -- I just need it to make sure all my connecting nodes are
the same to get the topology right while I am adding new roads from the data
I collected over the last two years.

Now the data set size for the area has grown to 20MB and I cannot load it
into JOSM anymore without it saying that I am out of memory. On a laptop
with 2GB memory that should not really be the case.
Is there a switch/fix or else that will allow me to run JOSM with a data set
this size?
