The problem I can see with this is that the source attribute can be
altered (or stripped). Is it possible to add a 'write once' attribute to
the data? say 'bulk-contributor' which could be viewed, rendered, parsed
etc. but not removed from the data.

In the same way that osmarender can add the CC notice, it could add a
'includes data from ...'.

Using a username for upload will only work until the node/way is altered,
at which point the node/way will take on the (c) of the modifier.
