Perhaps part of the drowning is an effect of the grey backgrownd of the
captionless zoom 12 tiles used for "stitching". Wouldn't white work better
for lowzoom?

And from the look of the lowzoom tiles I think that the color of the
"compressed" pixels after stitching is darker than the medium of the 4
pixels before compression. So on the way from zoom 11 to 0 the land gets
darker and darker. (Could be an artefact of my monitor??)
