You will probably have more luck with the following application, which 
does the tile cutting you need:

http://www.casa.ucl.ac.uk/software/googlemapimagecutter.asp

Mapnik is not meant as a tile cutter, but renders data from a XML file, 
so I think it wouldnt be off much use for you.
