It's a lot of very tedious work, more than double the work of actually laying
out the streets, looks messy and has no advantage when used just for
interpolation; I suggest you try mapping a few km of road with the suggested
systems, you will quickly see the difference. I also don't like the rendering
at all, but proper rendering of numbers the way we do here (so that people
here will use it) is something I'll do later, I've been tinkering with curves
so far, but that belongs to mapnik-devel :-)
