SRTM stands for Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, so i don't think
they use aerial photos. :-)
many of the high-quality DEMs (Digital Elevation Model), such as the
soviet ones, are created from stereo photogrammetry. although more
modern ones are starting to use LIDAR.
