I wouldn't say block, but it does provide instant gratification.

I don't think looking at total number of users would be of much use in
seeing the effect of updates becoming more frequent, since you don't
need to make any changes to create an account etc.

I would instead be checking out the number of edits made by new users,
if instant gratification is something that influences new users I
would expect the amount of edits per new user to increase as the
technology to show changes has improved.
