Maybe in your area, but speaking from experience Australia is very poorly mapped out except for metro areas. There is large areas that look empty but really aren't, there is back roads all over the place, they just haven't been mapped out for the most part.

The reasons for the lack of mapping is Australian Government not releasing maps made with public funding, poor resolution sat imagery and lack of people and/or resources to map them out with GPS.
