Looks like this is the precise point he got stuck...

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=53.704568,-2.110326&spn=0.00056,0.001717&z=20

heading in from the north, it looks OK until the walls end, I guess he was
hoping that the road quality would improve again, especially with a bit of
teleatlas reasurrance... The road he'd been driving down for the previous
few miles had been getting smaller and smaller and of worse and worse
quality too... So, ok, the driver screwed up by not knowing when to stop...
Teleatlas screwed up by including it as a road... The local council could
probably also be said to have screwed up assuming it's not got barriers or
signs there... From the sat imagery there quite a bit of usage wear on stone
road suggesting people drive into there, I can't believe it's all from the
cars going to access the mobile transmitter masts...

I've been down some nasty, tiny, poor quality roads before, before I ever
used sat nav devices and at a certain point made a decision to stop and go
back... some of those times the road did fade away into nothingness and it
would have been good to have some signage to warn of that say when entering
the road, other times it got better and continued to the place I wanted to
be, but, I only found out afterwards having wasted quite a bit of time
reversing out only to get confirmation from a couple of people that it was
the right way to go... some of those roads look to be somewhat worse quality
than that track, at least while it has walls at the north end...

I think in a situation like this there's plenty of blame to pass about...
Yes, the driver should take a good share, but, not all of it...
