Can you see them if you switch on the data layer (on the OSM map)?

If you can, then the data is there (which it should be, because you can
see it in JOSM).  If so, it might be simply a misspelling of a tag, or
maybe you have chosen a tag that Mapnik doesn't yet (or won't) render.
