there is also this Perl script by Richard Fairhurst, which converts
OSM to Illustrator 6, but then it's a lot of work to assemble the map,
you will have to assign a style to each entity (you can do a search,
as OSM-tags are converted and added into the ai-file):

it is some work, but if you want to do just one design it might be not
too difficult (you can use the application that you're used to). On
the other hand if you make a mapnik-stylesheet that works for your
area, it will mostly work on the whole planet and you can do frequent
updates in a short time without effort whenever you like ;-)
