I had intended to add:

[*] I haven't computed this myself due to lack of mathematical genius 
but if someone feels so inclined, I would be interested to know the 
answer to the following question: "Given that OSM accuracy is very 
seldom better than 1 metre, how far apart would two nodes have to be so 
that the difference between "straight line on mercator", "straight line 
on EPSG:4326", and "great circle" exceeds that accuracy? - The answer 
will probably be latitude dependent, so it would be good to know the 
value for some example countries.
