[OSM-talk] how to apply OSM styles to maps using Quantum GIS

Hi:
Could someone point out to a step by step document where I can learn about map styles? I am trying to map county roads and highways but my line shapes don't have any style and look plain. I am not a programmer but I am getting my feet wet with python so I don't mind using the qgis python console if needed to learn about map styles. I have looked in the web but can't find anything for beginners, every document I found seem to be for advanced users. Thanks for any hints.
