FWIW I agree with you, and I we should rip off google maps layout.

What I really wanted to say before was that I know the feeling, I had
it last time it was SOTM, but then I thought it's only ~3 weeks per
year and people really should go. What you are really want is a
redesign of the front page, which hasn't really changed at all since
2005.

Before 2005 the search field had pretty good visibilty, but that was
because of "tile" generation performance problems..
